I posted a pair of my favorite shoes EVER on etsy because I needed money (I’ve renewed it so you can see the original listing). Fast forward a few months and they were in major mass production at one of the most current shoe companies in the world.

It all started with a tumblr post. You know the one, where someone photographs all of their platform shoes on the floor and it gets reblogged 2,000 times? That photo. I’m scanning through this boring blog and see this typical photo and my heart skips a beat. Those are my shoes. How did that person get my shoes? Why are my shoes in a pile of Jeffrey Campbell shoes?! I rush up to my closet and see that they are safely on a shelf. Then I freak out.

Google Jeffrey Campbell. Look through pages on pages of China Made rip-offs. Find Shoes. They’re called Nicky Says? Who is Nicky? More Google. Nicky’s (Nickie’s) blog. To put it shortly, she saw my shoes, they weren’t in her size. She contacted Jeffrey Campbell and they said “that the shoe was completely crucial & put them into production”. The Nicky Says shoe (also called The Crosby) debuted on Polyvore on November 8th, 2010. It was called a “designer collaboration” between Nickie Noel and Jeffrey Campbell.

I left a comment on Nickie’s blog (that got erased), and this was her reply. (Note that she uses reselling vintage as an example as opposed to what really happened– mass production of a shoe they didn’t even buy before ripping off).

“For the record, I did NOT get paid for the design. I asked them if they could make a shoe like that, they said yes, I got a free pair of shoes. It is quite common to use vintage (or even new) pieces in product development. I worked for two large retailers (apparel AND home) who used this practice rather liberally, tweeking colors or minor details. Modcloth has built their business on this practice, for all intents & purposes. One of my best etsy customers is actually another vintage store (a big name you would definitely recognize). They buy from me & resell for like three times the price. I just sold an item to Lucky Brand Jeans, for crying out loud! It happens. Please don’t be upset. There are some pieces that are worth resurrecting so everyone can enjoy them, not just the size 8, 4, & 6 that manage to still be floating around.”

Here’s my beef: ripping off an original design is disrespectful. No, it wasn’t my design. I’m not saying it was. These shoes were HAND CRAFTED, COUTURE and ONE-OF-A-KIND (so rare is the latter actually so!). And because I needed money (I was opening my vintage storefront), Nickie wanted them, and JC wanted to make $$$, they ended up being made in China (probably) by babies and on the feet of a bunch of people who don’t give two shits about where they came from. Free People, Nasty Gal, Polyvore, Modcloth, and so many others sold these shoes.
